we are underused

can you make a place for us
by the fire
as the sparks send up proof
of our existence
or the rumor of our existence

has god sent a search party for us
or are we supposed to send one

i was told the stars
were just pieces of ember
from every fire ever lit
that got stuck there
in the sky
on their way to heaven

they spell out a story
that’s always changing
but the sky keeps telling us the same thing
even though we’re always looking
for something more
